CSEA scholarship apps are due April 29

The grandchildren, dependents and spouses of CSEA members have until April 29 to submit scholarship applications to the CSEA Foundation.
Scholarship applications may be obtained by calling Gae Van Wagoner at (916) 326-4228 or they can be downloaded by going to the CSEA Web site at www.calcsea.org Click on CSEA Foundation in the left column.
Applications must be postmarked by April 29 and sent to: CSEA Foundation, Attention: Gae Van Wagoner, 1108 O St., Sacramento, CA 95814.
Founded in 1984, the California State Employees Association Foundation (CSEAF) is a tax-exempt nonprofit corporation funded by fundraisers, tax-deductible contributions and support from the members and the public.
“This program has been a tremendous value to the members of CSEA’s affiliates in helping their dependents and grandchildren prepare for their careers,” said Joan A. Kennedy, president of the CSEA Foundation. “With ever-increasing tuition fees and the severe cutbacks in federal and state assistance, this program becomes more and more important.”
Kennedy noted that there are always more applicants than funds and difficult decisions must be made every year in selecting students the scholarship committee feels will benefit the most from the education scholarship and who have the greatest need for financial aid.
The annual scholarships are intended for the following school year. Applicants may reapply each year while attending college.
Successful scholarship applicants will:
- Have a grade point average of 3.0 (based on a 4 point system) utilizing grades in all subjects taken in grades 10, 11 and the first semester of 12. College students will be considered based on the grade point average for years attended.
- Be at least a high school senior (preference will be given); however, college students will be considered. Previous applicants are encouraged to reapply regardless of decisions on prior applications.
- Use the scholarship awarded for scholastic or vocational course of study.
- Complete an essay of 500 words or less expressing personal goals and how this scholarship will benefit his or her goals. Any unusual circumstances relating to financial need may be included. Applicants should use a word processing program and print essays, double spaced, on 8.5” by 11” paper.
- Provide copies of high school or college transcripts in a sealed envelope (included in the packet). Students who have completed their freshman year of college need not send high school transcripts.
- Submit a summary of any honors received in school, participation in various extracurricular activities, as well as community service work and work experience, if applicable.
- Submit two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, coaches or employers.
